Inspired by historical and contemporary still life images, my photographs echo elements of the genre and add vibrancy by the use of saturated colors. At first glance, Life Stills depicts one course of a dinner, but on closer inspection, the seemingly repetitive scene shows progression and the passage of time. The table is set, food is brought and consumed, wine glasses emptied and refilled, table decorations played with. Social interaction is hinted at but without a physical human hand. This interplay of form and material creates informal yet personal dialogue between the viewer and the tableaux.
Each print consists of four individual photographs blended together to make a seamless, continuous piece.
Commonplace objects placed in unconventional arrangements form the images with light and shadow adding an extra dimension.
The genesis of Within 3 Feet started on a normal day with me working at my desk. Surrounded by familiar clutter, both meaningful and ordinary, I realized that my desk plays a lead role in my daily life and as such, deserves recognition. Papers, books, and other paraphernalia cover the surface in chaotic order; a small glimpse into who I am. These images document a slice of life from the confines of my desk chair, nothing added, nothing removed.
Continuing to explore the Within 3 Feet concept, my kitchen table became the central focus. Part II is abstract; where the relationship between light and shadow becomes more important than the objects themselves.
